In Bed by Ten, where parents go dancing too
At Kidsburgh, we recognize that moms and dads need to unwind sometimes. And for parents who are torn between nostalgia for late-night soirées and the compulsion to attend only matinees, a local duo has invented a new type of night out–one that accommodates a family-friendly sleep schedule.
The new In Bed by Ten (IBBT) dance party runs monthly from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Spirit Lodge in Lawrenceville. DJ MB, Matthew Buchholz, spins a mix of ’80’s, ’90’s and modern music, while guests dance and get a drink and a slice of pizza at the bar. In lieu of a cover charge, a suggested $5 donation supports a different charity each month.
Buchholz is a local artist and disc jockey who partners with designer Kelly Beall to produce IBBT. Many of Buchholz’s friends are parents and can’t afford to sacrifice rest, and he too needs to be up bright and early. “While I don’t have kids, I do have a dog who is very insistent and gets me up very early,” he says.
Sherilyn Saporito is a local mother who attended the first IBBT dance party in May. “It’s nearly impossible to go dancing and not stay out all night,” says Saporito. “Parents want to have fun, but we are also tired and need to get the babysitter home at a reasonable hour. IBBT is great option.”
After the success of their first party, Beall and Buchholz realized that they “could do something with this, something good.” They introduced the cover charge at June’s event, and raised $450 for Animal Friends. July’s party benefited Girls Rock! Pittsburgh, a local nonprofit that empowers young girls by fostering musical creativity. The next IBBT party on Saturday, August 29 will raise funds for the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank.
So if parenthood has brought with it a curfew, book your babysitter for a summer’s end night out. RSVP here.
