10 events for families this weekend, from “Wicked” on Pittsburgh’s biggest screen to a Pirates pep rally and more

As we say goodbye to March in Pittsburgh, there is still one last weekend of the month left to squeeze in some family fun. If you haven’t caught the new “Snow White” movie yet, there’s a sensory-friendly screening this weekend that’s perfect for wiggly little ones or kiddos with sensory needs. There are also a few great library events, as well as lots of other chances to get out of the house and spend some time together.

Here are some of our favorite events this weekend:

Friday, March 28-Sunday, March 30: Dick’s Sporting Goods Sports Equipment Trade-In

Cleats too small to use this spring? This weekend, bring your gently used sporting equipment to Dick’s House of Sports at Ross Park Mall to trade it in for a Dick’s gift card. Before you go, be sure to check the event page for a list of the type of equipment that will be accepted.

Friday, March 28: “Wicked” at the Rangos Giant Cinema, 7 p.m.

This big-screen event is sure to be pop-U-lar. Come to the Carnegie Science Center and experience the drama of “Wicked” on the largest screen in Pittsburgh, surrounded by 49 speakers. Tickets are $12, and $10 for members. Find out more here.

Saturday, March 29: Baby and Me! at Los Sabrosos, 9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

This fun and relaxed dance and music class is designed to promote bonding between babies and their cherished grown-ups. Hold your baby, wear them in a carrier, or just have them next to you while jamming to music both you and baby can enjoy. Learn more and register here.

Saturday, March 29: Sensory-friendly screening of “Snow White” at the Lindsay Theater, 9:30 a.m.

The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center in Sewickley will hold a sensory-friendly screening of “Snow White” this weekend. “Snow White” is Disney’s live-action remake of the 1937 animated classic “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.” Tickets to this and all sensory-friendly screenings are discounted to $8.75 each. Sensory-friendly screenings are designed so everyone can enjoy a personal, unhurried cinematic experience. Find more info here.

Saturday, March 29: Storytime at the Museum, 10:15 a.m.

Start your Saturday with Storytime at the Museum of Natural History. Hear nature and science stories read by the museum’s Natural History Interpreters and get a chance to touch museum specimens. Feel free to stop by for one page or a single book, or stay for the whole 45 minutes. Registration is not required. This program is free with admission and meets at the bench at the entrance of Dinosaurs in Their Time. Find more details here.

Saturday, March 29: Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus Community Workshop, 2 p.m. 

This workshop will be at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Hill District location. It will be led by a Pittsburgh Cultural Trust teaching artist based on “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus, the Musical” that will be presented at the Byham Theater on April 26 (info on that here). The target audience is children aged 3-8, but anyone is welcome. Each child will receive a book, and tickets will be provided for them to see the show next month at the Byham. Find more info here

Saturday, March 29: Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s “Dance the Story” at CLP, 2 p.m. 

At the Knoxville branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, kids from birth to 5th grade are invited to this free event that will weave books and dance together. Come learn some new moves! No registration is required, find details here.

Saturday, March 29: Incubator Comics presents You Can Toon! For Families at CLP, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.

This free event is designed for artists of all ages and will be held at the Hazelwood branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Incubator Comics brings their expertise to attendees to help them learn how to create comic drawings while fostering a family-friendly learning environment. Find more details here.

Saturday, March 29: Pittsburgh Night at the Pittsburgh Riverhounds game, 7 p.m. 

Come out to Highmark Stadium and cheer on the Riverhounds as they face the Birmingham Legion under the bright lights. This evening is geared toward celebrating our Pittsburgh heritage, so wear your black and gold. Tickets begin at $12.

Sunday, March 30: Pirates Pep Rally at Federal Galley, 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. 

Baseball season is upon us, and Federal Galley is kicking it off with a Pirates Pep Rally this weekend. There will be a Jalapeño Hannah meet-and-greet for the first hour. The event will feature face painting, giveaways, food and drink samples, and more. Federal Galley is located adjacent to the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh and within walking distance of Gus and Yia Yia’s ice ball cart, so make a day of exploring the Central North Side.
