10 events this weekend around Pittsburgh, from after-hours museum fun to the annual Labor Day Parade

Labor Day is here! This three-day weekend was created to honor the economic and industrial achievements of American workers. From community day parties to parades, there are several ways for families in and around Pittsburgh to do just that.

Looking for a different way to spend the long weekend? There are many other events happening this weekend, from reptile expos to quiet library story times. With most schools across the region back in session, it’s a great time to enjoy the extra day off, talk with kids about the new school year, and try out some fun (and mostly free!) activities:

Friday, Aug. 30: Good Friday at the Warhol, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Each and every week, the Andy Warhol Museum is open late (and admission is half-priced)! With school in session, it’s a great chance to browse the museum during the evening. Find admission rates and more details here.

Friday, Aug. 30: Last Fridays at the Pennsylvania Trolley Museum, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

On the last Friday of each month, the trolley museum is open late for extra fun. There will be live music, so bring a lawn chair and a picnic basket. Admission is $10 for the evening. Find out about this event, and the trolley museum in general, here.

Friday, Aug. 30 – Sunday, Sept. 1: Pittsburgh Soul Food Festival

This weekend, chefs from around the region join together to celebrate soul food, Black culture and the vibrancy of the city. On Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., the Boulevard of the Allies will be packed with delicious eats. Find more info here.

Saturday, Aug. 30: North Boroughs Community Day, 6 p.m.

It’s time for take two! The July version of this event was rained out, so the communities of Bellevue, Avalon, Ben Avon, Ben Avon Heights, Emsworth, and Killbuck Township are giving it a second shot. Come to Avalon Park for food vendors, music, and fireworks. There’s plenty of space for kids to run around, ride scooters, and more. Find all of the event details here.

Saturday, Aug. 31: Baby and Toddler Snugglebugs, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Come out to the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville location for a quiet time of play, exploration, and literacy with other local families. This event is free and geared towards children who have not yet begun school. Find more details here.

Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept 1: Pittsburgh Reptile Expo, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. 

The Pittsburgh Epic Two-Day Reptile Expo is an immersive experience that fosters an understanding and appreciation for reptiles and amphibians. The organizers say whether you’re looking to expand your knowledge, find new pets, or simply have a fun day out with the family, this expo offers something for everyone. Saturday, Aug. 31 and Sunday, Sept. 1: “Twelfth Night” by Pittsburgh Shakespeare in the Park, 12 p.m. 

At the Highland Park Super Playground this weekend (and at various spots across the city all month), catch this reimagined version of “Twelfth Night” with a tropical twist. All performances are free and family-friendly. Find details and the full lineup here.

Sunday, Sept. 1: Kamin Family Free Day at the Carnegie Science Center, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Dan and Carole Kamin, whose recent endowment to the Science Center means that families can continue to learn and explore for years to come, are excited to offer a day of free admission to local families as we kick off a new school year. Find more details about the event here.

Sunday, Sept. 1: Allegheny County Music Festival, 5:30 p.m. 

This weekend at Hartwood Acres, enjoy a stellar lineup of musicians, headlined by Michael Serveris performing David Bowie’s hits. There is a suggested donation of $20 per car to benefit local youth programming. but the event is free. Find out more about the performers, history, and more here.

Monday, Sept. 2: Pittsburgh Labor Day Parade, 10 a.m. 

This parade, which is hosted by the Allegheny-Fayette Central Labor Council, will kick off on Centre Avenue and head towards Grant Street. It’s a great opportunity to celebrate the history of labor in this Rust Belt City, as well as look towards the future in the region. Find all the details about the parade route here.
