10 weekend events in Pittsburgh that won’t break the bank — but aren’t short on fun!

It’s nearly August, and that means there are still a few more weeks to pack with summer fun. We’ve got a big guide to the whole month ahead. But if you’re looking for something to do this weekend, check out the great lineup below. Catch some outdoor music, take in a show, or try out track and field events (for free!)

It’s always a great weekend in Kidsburgh, and this one is no exception:

Friday, Aug. 2 thru Sunday, Aug. 4: “Samson: The Wrestling Musical” by Urban Impact Foundation

This show will take place this weekend and next at Christ Church at Grove Farm in Sewickley. Put on largely by teenage actors, this performing arts program produces cutting edge shows, from modernized Shakespeare to this quirky musical. Tickets begin at $10 and can be purchased here.

Friday, Aug. 2 and Saturday, Aug. 3: Alumni Theater Company presents “Be More Chill”

The Alumni Theater Company Teen Ensemble is excited to present their 100th show, Joe Tracz’s “Be More Chill.” Catch the show at their home theater, the Bill Nunn Black Box. As a spectacular conclusion to her 16-year tenure with ATC, fearless founder Hallie Donner directs 16 Pittsburgh teens in this campy sci-fi adventure about an undeniably average nerd scaling the harrowing heights of high school social hierarchy. Friday, Aug. 2: Summer Fridays at The Frick, 5 p.m. 

Celebrate 10 years of Summer Fridays at the Frick, and 30 years of music on the lawns of The Frick during the 2024 Summer Fridays season.  This Friday, hear music from Cello Fury. This event is free, but a suggested donation of $5 is requested. Bring a blanket, picnic basket, and enjoy a late summer night that’s become a Pittsburgh tradition. Find details here.

Friday, Aug. 2: Under the Sea Family Adventure Night at Phipps Conservatory, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. 

This weekend, visitors can explore the magical underwater world of Phipps’ Summer Flower Show during Under the Sea: Family Adventure Night. There will be educational activity stations, incredible displays and more. Find all the details here.

Saturday, Aug. 3-Sunday, Aug. 4: Moraine State Park Regatta

The regatta celebrates its 25th anniversary this summer. The purpose of the event is to showcase eco-recreational activities with water and land opportunities for all ages, nature-themed experiences, live music and vendors from the local community. Admission is free, with food and beverage available for purchase.

Saturday, Aug. 3: P3R Youth MOVE Day, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come out to the RMU Sports Complex for a day devoted to movement and fitness. This free event allows kids ages 5 to 11 to test their hand at track and field, race against friends, and more. Find all the details here.

Saturday, Aug. 3: Storytime at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m. 

Each Wednesday and Saturday through the end of August, the staff at the CMNH are hosting a storytime (free with museum admission). Meet at the entrance to Dinosaurs in Their Time and listen to the story, enjoy hands-on activities, and make some friends. Find more details here.

Saturday, Aug. 3: Therapet Visit at CLP, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

Come to the Mount Washington branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh to meet with trained therapy animals from Animal Friends. This event is great for kids learning to build confidence with pets, but anyone is welcome. Find details here.

Saturday, Aug. 3: Family Nature Walk at Powdermill Nature Reserve, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. 

Join staff from Powdermill and the Carnegie Museum of Natural History to hit the trails for a guided nature walk. The group will meet in the atrium of the Powdermill Nature Center at 2 p.m. before heading outside to explore. This family-friendly experience is open to participants of all ages. This event is free to all participants. Registration required.

Sunday, Aug. 4: Rhythms of the 80’s presents “Jaws” at the Lindsay Theater, 1 p.m. 

The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center’s Rhythms of the ’80s summer series continues with a 4K restoration of “Jaws” this weekend as part of their summer throwback movie series. It’s not for the faint of heart, but bigger kids will likely enjoy this classic thriller. Tickets begin at $11 and details can be found here.
