Maker Monday: Kids can make these lovely domino tile necklaces

As we did last week, Kidsburgh is happy to be bringing you another kindness-themed Maker Monday project from classrooms around our region that have participated in the #bethekindkid Kindness in Action Campaign. Today’s project comes from one of those classrooms — a group of fourth-graders at Northgate School District.

Since mid-September, classrooms participating in the #bethekindkid Kindness in Action Campaign have been creating and sharing beautiful things: kindness initiatives, kindness-themed art installations and kindness-promoting maker projects. For this Maker Monday project, “the students are keeping with the theme ‘Kindness has a Domino Effect,'” says their teacher, Heather Persson. “They are decorating domino tiles and turning them into necklaces and key chains to sell before and after school. The money collected from the domino sales will be donated to the North Hills Community Outreach.”

As with all Maker Monday projects, the steps are easy and they’re all laid out in detail below. If you don’t have dominos at home, you can order a box online (there are some sets for about $7 on Amazon) or look for an inexpensive set at a dollar store or big-box store.

A safety note to kid makers: Please work with a parent or caregiver on any Maker Monday project and always be very careful when using tools of any kind. This project involves using a drill, so that first step needs to be done by a grownup.

Maker Monday supplies you’ll need:

• dominos
• permanent markers
• pieces of ribbon, string or yarn
• scissors
• a drill

Maker Monday directions:

Step 1: (This step WILL require grown-up assistance!) Drill a small hole in the top of a domino tile. (The size of a circle already on the domino is perfect. But you don’t have to drill in a spot where you see a circle.)

Step 2: Grab your favorite permanent markers and think of your favorite kind sayings. Then sit down with your closest friends and have a domino decorating party.  The kinder the messages, the cooler the outcome!

Step 3: Cut a piece of ribbon, string or yarn to the desired length, so that it can be worn as a necklace. Then string it through the small hole in the decorated domino, tying it at the ends.

Step 4: Wear your decorated domino proudly and spread kindness to everyone you see! You can also make domino necklaces to give as gifts to friends and family!
