10 weekend events in Pittsburgh for maximum family fun (that won’t break the bank!)

With just a few quiet weeks left until the holidays begin in full force, this weekend is perfect for low-key family time. Catch local theater shows or a library event, or spend some quality time in nature. We’ve got a big guide to the whole holiday season right here, as well as a guide to the city’s Light Up Night event.
So sit the family down together, go over these great local options and choose a few you don’t want to miss. It’s the perfect way to get out and enjoy the Pittsburgh region.
Friday, Nov. 15: The UPMC Rink at PPG Place 2024 Opening, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Beginning this weekend, skaters can circle the fabulous holiday Christmas tree at the downtown skating rink. The 60-foot-tall tree uses energy-efficient LED lights with the ability to perform various light shows throughout the day. Skating sessions are $12 for adults and teens, or $11 for ages 12 and younger, seniors and first responders.
Friday, Nov. 15: “The Wizard of Oz” at The Lindsay
Are you excited for “Wicked” to drop on Nov. 22? Starting this Friday and running through Nov. 21, The Lindsay Theater and Cultural Center will be showing a 4K restoration of “The Wizard of Oz.” Follow the yellow brick road to Sewickley and experience “The Wizard of Oz” on the big screen. There are various show times, and tickets are $11. Find more info here.
Saturday, Nov. 16: Storytime with “The Little Prince,” 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Next weekend, “The Little Prince” will open at the Andrew Carnegie Free Music Hall (find tickets here). This weekend, kids can come to the Music Hall to learn about the story, sing some songs, and even draw their own sheep. This event is free, and walk-ins are welcome. But the organizers do ask families to register in advance, if they are able. The age range for this event is “the young and the young at heart.” Find more details here.
Saturday, Nov. 16: “Home Alone” at the Carnegie Science Center, 5:30 p.m. and 8 p.m.
You know the story: When Kevin gets left behind by his family, he takes control of protecting his home from a pair of hapless burglars. Whether it’s your kid’s first time watching it or their tenth time watching it, this film is always better on the big screen. Catch this holiday-favorite film at the Rangos Giant Cinema. Tickets are $12.
Saturday, Nov. 16: “I Made It! For the Holidays” Market, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
This market of handcrafted goods is the perfect spot to choose unique gifts for all of your loved ones. There are gifts at all price points made by local crafters and artists, so it’s a good spot to encourage kids to shop for their siblings or other family members while supporting local makers. Saturday, Nov. 16: Holiday Magic show opens at Phipps Conservatory and Botanic Gardens, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m
Phipps decorates inside and out for its winter flower show. Expect a magical unicorn topiary, iridescent snowflakes and a fairy tale-inspired display brought to life with a castle and glowing carriage. Take the pathway through the outdoor garden filled with colorful, glowing decorations. Kids will find the Garden Railroad especially appealing with its Holiday Magic theme. Timed tickets are $21.95, $19.95 for seniors and students, $13.95 for ages 2-18.
Saturday, Nov. 16: Teen Time at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
At the Woods Run branch of the CLP this weekend, teens are invited to gather for a free and low-key event where they can work on projects, play games, read or listen to music in a relaxed atmosphere. Find more details about this event here.
Saturday, Nov. 16: O’Ryan the O’Mazing’s Spectacular Circus Class, 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
A free circus class? Yes, please! This event, at the West End branch of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, runs from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. and is geared towards kids and adults of all ages. If you’ve ever wanted to learn to juggle or spin plates while having fun with friends, this event is the perfect choice. No registration is required and more details can be found here.
Saturday, Nov. 16: SkyWatch at the Carnegie Science Center, 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Once a month, the Science Center opens up its giant telescope for visitors of all ages. The cost is $12, with a $2 discount for members. From 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., staff will guide visitors through the basics of astronomy and what can be seen in Pittsburgh’s night sky. Find tickets here.
Sunday, Nov. 17: Friendsgiving at the National Aviary, 11 a.m.
This Sunday, enjoy brunch in the garden room at The National Aviary to kick off the holiday season. The garden room overlooks the iconic rose garden and features two stone fireplaces for a cozy fall vibe. Tickets for adults are $55, kids 12 and under are $35.
