Baseball-loving Pittsburgh parents know Clint Hurdle from his years as a major league player and manager, including for the Pittsburgh Pirates. He’s also a father of two young adult kids and a published author: The wisdom that Hurdle once shared with his players is now being shared publicly through his inspirational emails and his new book, “Hurdle-isms: Wit and Wisdom from a Lifetime of Baseball.”
Kidsburgh Podcast co-hosts Melissa Rayworth and Kristine Sorensen talked with Clint in the latest episode of our second season. We spoke about many things, including:
- the power of taking a positive approach with kids, even when their behavior isn’t great (“Try and find ways to encourage and acknowledge the good stuff. Because when you can feed the good stuff, they have a chance of picking up on that and saying, OK, my parents like that. Let me do some more of that,” Hurdle said. “So let’s be that rudder or that sail of positivity in their life.”)
- offering kids a vision of where hard work can take them and how the whole family can work together toward goals
- and even what this sports professional learned about being a truly good sports parent.
