Pittsburghers may think of Erie for its summer beach vibes, but here’s a secret: Fall is when this lakeside town really comes alive.

As the temperatures drop and the beach towels get packed away, Erie, Pa., transforms into a cozy, adventure-filled getaway. Think fewer crowds, crisp air and a whole lineup of fall-friendly fun that you didn’t know was waiting for you just north of Pittsburgh. Whether you’re diving into indoor water parks or cozying up with bayfront views, here’s where to stay, play, and feast when you’re ready to experience Erie beyond the beach.

This nearby destination (about two hours north of Pittsburgh by car) works for kids of any age. So whether you’re wrangling toddlers or keeping teens entertained, this lakeside town has plenty of surprises up its sleeve.

Stay

Among the more affordable options: Kick back at Hampton Inn & Suites Erie Bayfront Hotel, where cozy meets convenient. It’s a good spot for panoramic views of Presque Isle Bay, and is just a quick jaunt to downtown Erie and all the action. Got little ones who need to burn off energy? The indoor pool and a hearty breakfast buffet will keep everyone happy and fueled for the day ahead.

Play: Splash, Climb, and Explore

Your family adventure starts at Splash Lagoon Indoor Water Park. Erie’s best-kept secret is this 84-degree Polynesian paradise, where you’ll find nine wild water slides, a 12-level tree house, and a wave pool big enough to feel like the real ocean (without the sand, thank goodness). Even on a gloomy winter day, this indoor oasis brings the sunshine. Kids can zoom down slides while parents float along in hot tubs, and with a connected arcade and ropes course, there’s plenty to keep everyone busy.

Looking for something that’ll give you a dose of nostalgia while keeping the kids entertained? At Play Port Arcade and Family Fun Center, you can step into the neon glow of the ’80s with over 100 games set to “free play.” Pac-Man, Donkey Kong and Centipede will have you feeling like a kid again, while laser tag, glow golf, and virtual reality experiences keep things fresh. No quarters, no fuss, just endless fun.

And when you’re ready to shake things up, head to 5 Wits at Millcreek Mall. This isn’t your typical escape room. It’s a real-life, story-driven adventure where you and the kids will solve puzzles and tackle hands-on challenges. Choose between action-packed quests like “Espionage” or “Drago’s Castle,” perfect for families that crave a little mystery and excitement.

Explore Outdoors: Animals, Mini Golf and More

If you need a change of pace after all that indoor game play and swimming, take the crew to the Erie Zoo and Botanical Gardens. With nearly 400 animals and 11 gardens, this is a zoo where you can slow down, explore at your own pace, and enjoy a few hours in nature. It’s an easy, stroller-friendly walk, and a must-see for animal-loving little ones.

For those who’ve got a competitive streak, check out Oliver’s Mini Golf, a hole-in-one family experience. This 18-hole course offers challenging terrain with views of Erie’s Bayfront as a backdrop. After your round, refuel at Oliver’s Food Truck or settle in at The Cove for casual waterfront dining with a laid-back tiki hut vibe that might just make you forget you’re in Pennsylvania. Bonus: There’s a kids’ menu to satisfy even the pickiest eaters.

If you prefer something a bit more educational (but still fun), head to the expERIEnce Children’s Museum. The interactive exhibits are hands-on, with something for kids ages 1 through 12. The museum recently expanded, so you’ll find even more space to create, explore and imagine.

Want to sneak in a little eco-learning? Check out the Tom Ridge Environmental Center (TREC). With free admission, you can explore the interactive exhibits, learn about the wildlife that calls Presque Isle home, and even climb the observation tower for jaw-dropping views of Lake Erie.

Eat: Retro Vibes, Hot Dogs and Unique Treats

A family trip to Erie isn’t complete without a stop at Sara’s Diner. This 50s-style roadside spot is an Erie staple, especially after a day at Presque Isle. Picture foot-long Smith’s hot dogs (an Erie original), crispy onion rings, and milkshakes so thick you’ll need a spoon. Don’t forget to grab a soft-serve cone—the orange-vanilla twist is a local fave. It’s retro, fun, and delicious — the trifecta for a weekend roadtrip.

For a little more variety, Flagship City Food Hall offers a range of dining options. This modern food hall downtown features local vendors serving up everything from pizza to ramen, plus bagels and soul food.

Need a dinner spot with atmosphere? The Brewerie at Union Station serves up casual fare inside a historic train station. It’s not just about the food (though their burgers and fries are solid) — it’s the vibe. Kids will love checking out the old train cars, while you can relax with one of their house-brewed beers.

Feeling adventurous? Stop by Lucky Louie’s Beer and Wieners. You can enjoy craft beer while the kids dive into quirky hot dog creations like the Octo-Dog, which comes with hot dogs shaped like little octopuses.
