My Favorite Pittsburgh Thing To Do With Kids: Dorie Taylor
As a girl growing up in Morgantown, W.Va., Pittsburgh was the big city her family would visit for entertainment.
As a grown-up Pittsburgh mom, Dorie Taylor continues to find the big city a wonderland of activities for her family. Taylor, who owns Taylor Made Consulting, lives in North Point Breeze with her husband, Seth Hufford, owner of The People Group, and their children, Nevins, 8, and Miles, 5.
Dorie and Seth, who grew up in Pittsburgh, have a real appreciation for the variety of cultural offerings here, having lived in other parts of the country before boomeranging back home in 2010.
“As entrepreneurs with two small kids, Seth and I feel lucky about the quantity of quality family time that we are able to indulge in,” Dorie says. “What the kids ask to do most often is visit Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens. We enjoy the seasonal exhibits, and the boys love following the treasure map.” They put their Phipps membership to good use, visiting often, and they enjoy their Carnegie Museums membership, too.
Not to mention sports. “From March to August, we attend Riverhounds soccer games at Highmark Stadium on the South Side,” Dorie says. “The boys love the Dippin’ Dots and going onto the field at the end of the games.”
For stay-at-home weekends, they enjoy family walks or bike rides through Frick Park and lounging on the lawns of the Frick Art & Historical Center and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.
“Family time is important to us because it’s fleeting,” Dorie says. “It is said, ‘The days are long, but the years are short.’ We enjoy spending time with our kids, making the long days fun and the years memorable.”
