My Favorite Pittsburgh Thing To Do With Kids: Gina Kipela
Gina Kilpela and her husband, Ed, have a greater appreciation for Pittsburgh’s attractions since their return to the city four years ago after an absence of 10 years.
Pittsburgh natives, she and Ed – he’s an attorney at Carlson, Lynch, Sweet, Kilpela, and Carpenter, LLP – went to high school together.
“It’s so great to be back in Pittsburgh and be a part of all of its energy,” says Gina, middle school language arts and writing teacher at The Ellis School. “I love to be active.”
The couple’s 8-year-old twins – Devin and Graham – benefit from that vitality through the family’s regular exploration of local bike trails.
“My family and I love to ride bikes,” says Gina of Mt. Lebanon. “I just got my first bike in 30 years for Mother’s Day! Biking is a wonderful way for us to be together, get some exercise, and explore the city. We have spent many weekends biking the city trails and enjoying Open Streets.”
When the weather doesn’t cooperate, the family heads to the Wheel Mill in Homewood.
“The boys love to mountain and BMX bike, and the Wheel Mill allows them to practice both, even on rainy days,” Gina says. “This facility is wonderful for children of all ages and has taken measures to meet the needs of children with differences.”
She views family time as vital for bonding their relationships:
“The time we spend together doing something we all enjoy is how we stay connected day to day and build memories for years to come.”
