Maker Monday: Funny Faces in Woodworking
This activity is a great way to practice basic woodworking skills and to get creative, says Alison Francis at the Creativity and Literacy Program of Fox Chapel Area School District.
Head to the garage workbench, where the basic tools can be found. Mom or Dad will need to help with this project.
Always wear safety gear and be sure to use a work surface that will not get damaged.
Materials and tools:
Safety goggles
A piece of wood for the face. We used scrap wood cut to 4-inches-by-6-inches, but you can use any shape or size you like.
Hammer
Screwdriver
Hand drill
Hot glue gun
Nails and screws
Assorted odds and ends to create the face — buttons, wooden spools, drawer handles, bottle caps, washers, etc.
After putting on safety goggles, select the items you wish to use to create the face. Experiment with different ideas by placing the objects onto the wood before attaching them permanently.
Once you have decided on a plan, begin to assemble using the various methods available to you. You can choose to nail, screw, or glue.
As an option, you can use the hand drill to create a pilot hole to start the nail or screw. When assembling your funny face, make sure the nails and screws do not penetrate the other side of the wood leaving sharp edges exposed.
Show off your awesome creation!
