My Favorite Pittsburgh Thing To Do With Kids: Chuck Herring, aka Grammar Man
Dr. Chuck Herring and his wife, Dr. Christine Herring, know how to have fun with kids.
Both of their careers center on education – he’s a K-5 enrichment teacher in South Fayette Township School District and she works in early childhood education at Sewickley Academy.
Chuck, an acclaimed author and speaker, finds all sort of cool ways to break down complicated ideas into mentally digestible pieces for kids to use in the classroom and their personal lives. A terrific example is his role as Grammar Man, a hip-hop superhero dedicated to protecting the Steel City from the villainous Double Negative (see Grammar Man video here).
The Monroeville couple’s three kids — Vanessa, 30; Ashley, 29; Imani, 21 – are all grown up, but Chuck and Christine still find time to hang out with the youngest generation through family and friends.
His favorite thing to with kids in Pittsburgh?
“I believe the best-kept secret for fun in Pittsburgh is the Carnegie Library System,” Chuck says. “It is so much more than books! From story time to DJ-ing classes to learning how to code, our libraries have a little something for just about every interest. And, the best part about it is that it doesn’t cost the parents any out-of-pocket expenses.”
