My Favorite Pittsburgh Thing To Do With Kids: Megs Yunn of Beverly’s Birthdays
Megs Yunn loves a good party. As founder and executive director of the non-profit Beverly’s Birthdays, she celebrates birthdays with kids in need, many of whom have never had a birthday party.
Spending time with her own kids is even more fun. A favorite activity is having Wyatt, 5, Lincoln, 4, Sadie, 2, and baby Grayson hang out at work with Mom.
“My office looks like a toy shop,” Megs says. “My kids get to come up and help Mommy spread birthday cheer. I love teaching them the value of helping others. We often have families come to our office and volunteer – such a fun and easy way to keep kids entertained – and teach them the gift of service!”
She and her husband Mike, a software engineer, find lots of other things to do with their kids near their Irwin home.
“We love doing a pizza and ice cream day in downtown Irwin,” Megs says. “We visit Iceburgh’s Bistro and my kids can share a whole pizza for $5. Afterward, we visit McFeeley’s Gourmet Chocolate. This is a super cute candy and ice cream shop and they love getting to pick out an ice cream treat.”
The family is looking forward to warmer weather for picnic and playground days at spots like White Oak Park and Renzie Spray Ground in McKeesport. “This splash pad is perfect for young children and it is free,” Megs says.
Building warm memories is a personal mission for Megs, whether for her Beverly’s Birthdays kids or her crew at home.
“When I look back on my childhood, I am flooded with happy, positive memories,” she says. “My parents always made a point of doing special activities together as a family and I want my children to have similar memories. Raising four little ones is pure chaos, but our days are filled with so much laughter and joy. Yunn family – party of six!”
