Celebrate digital learning at the free Digital Corps Spring Party
The Remake Learning Digital Corps helps Pittsburgh teens and tweens explore an increasingly important human habitat—the digital landscape. And thanks to guidance from Corps mentors at out-of-school learning venues all over the city, the journey is fun for these young people. They acquire cool skills—like how to program robots, make video games, code websites, earn digital badges—and they attain the “know-how” to land that 21st-century job.
This Saturday, the Sprout Fund’s Digital Corps celebrates these young people and their journey toward digital literacy at the first Digital Corps Spring Party from 12 to 3 p.m. at the Jeron X. Grayson Center in the Hill District.
“At Sprout, we’re strong believers that youth need to take ownership of their learning and reflect on what they’ve been doing,” says Ani Martinez, Digital Corps program manager. “But digital literacy is very different. It can feel very intangible. We hope the Spring Party will help these young people claim ownership of their work and help us all celebrate what they’ve accomplished.”
Geared toward children ages 10 and up, this weekend’s free party will showcase youth projects created with help from the Corps. Party-goers will also participate in hands-on tech activities, enjoy free refreshments and dance to the music of DJ Thermos.
But, there’s more. “It’s also a chance for families to find out about the fun and free learning opportunities that are available through Digital Corps,” says Martinez, who emphasizes that youth digital learning in Pittsburgh is a year-round affair, including in the summer months and at the 25 free after-school programs staffed by Corps mentors.
