Parents and caregivers: You’re going to love our latest podcast episode. It’s all about helping the whole family feel comfortable noticing and acknowledging when stress pops up and talking about the good steps they can take to reduce it.
We’ve written in the past about how helpful it is when parents learn to manage their own feelings. This week’s podcast guests from AHN’s Chill Project, Paige Cholewinski and Chloe Scott, build on that idea by sharing that “by being able to start noticing how we react and the emotions we feel when stressed, it can have a huge impact on how our children handle stress.”
They explain that adults can model for children by saying things like, “I’m anxious today about a meeting I have at work. I’m going to take a few deep breaths on the drive in to work to help me.” Discussing that kind of strategy can show kids that everyone feels stress, but there are good ways to make ourselves feel better.
“Expressing how you’re feeling can help children identify their feelings,” these behavioral health educators said, and it can help normalize their feelings and emotions.
The episode is packed with breathing exercises and lots of other ideas about managing stress, along with details on volunteering with kids at Animal Friends and how the Spilling the Tea with Teens high schoolers handle their stressful moments.
Our podcast is hosted by the Kidsburgh team — Kristine Sorensen, Melissa Rayworth and Yu-Ling Cheng — and recorded by SLB Radio Productions. Get all the details here. Find us on Apple Podcasts, Pandora and Spotify, at the SLB website, or listen right here:
