The wonder of winter comes to life at Winterfest, The Frick Pittsburgh’s annual celebration of the snowy season!

Beat the post-holiday blues with a weekend full of family-friendly offerings including live performances, art-making activities, historic home tours, cozy treats and warm beverages from The Café at the Frick, plus so much more!

Frick Winterfest takes place Saturday, Jan. 18 and Sunday, Jan. 19. Most events are free, including live performances by the South Hills Children’s Choir and Trinidadian-born flutist Gemma Stemley, Glass Blowing demonstrations with Pittsburgh Glass Center, a Scavenger Hunt of hidden snowmen with a special prize for finding them all, art-making on a collaborative mural, a hot chocolate bar, and more. Tickets to the open house of Clayton are $5.

In addition to Winterfest-exclusive programming, the Frick offers a number of amenities for those visiting with young children, including the Scott Family Infant Care Room and an art supply library, both located in the Grable Visitor Center.

PROGRAMS AND ACTIVITIES

South Hills Children’s Choir presents “In the Bleak Midwinter”: Jan. 18 | 10:30 a.m.–3 p.m. | Grable Visitor Center

In the bleak midwinter under the cloak of chilly cold, a fresh start happens. Snow blankets the ground covering its barrenness. Ice crystals sparkle catching timid rays of sunlight. Sleds, snowmen, and snowball fights fill the landscape with cheer. Come listen to the South Hills Children’s Choir’s winterscape of choral music, celebrating a fresh perspective of this frigid season. Free and open to all.

Flutist Gemma Stemley presents Warm Winter Rhythms: Jan. 19 | 12–2 p.m. | Grable Visitor Center

Escape the chill with the vibrant sounds of Trinidadian-born flutist Gemma Stemley! Embark on a musical journey across the Caribbean as Gemma brings the infectious energy of Calypso, the soothing charm of Brazilian Bossa Nova, and the lively beats of Jamaican Mento Dance Hall to Winterfest. Let these rich rhythms, rooted in African traditions and blossomed in the Caribbean, fill your heart with warmth and joy amid the wonders of the snowy season. Free and open to all.

Clayton Open House: Jan. 18 & 19 | 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Explore the first floor of Clayton, the last remaining home of its kind in Pittsburgh, standing as a testament to another era and offering unique insights into our city’s past. Deepen your experience with hands-on activities! $5 per person. Members enter free. Tickets can be purchased at the Grable Visitor Center.

Hot Wheels: Glass Blowing with Pittsburgh Glass Center: Jan. 18 & 19 | 12–3 p.m. | North Lawn Path

Furnace-fired fun fueled by Pittsburgh Glass Center. Artists will conduct glass blowing demonstrations from this compact travelling glass studio, answer questions, and talk about the art and science of glassmaking. Free and open to all.

Greenhouse & Grounds: Jan. 18 & 19 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Throughout the Frick’s Grounds | Free and open to all

  • Winter Wish Sculpture: Make your winter wish and contribute to our interactive ribbon sculpture in the Education Center courtyard!
  • Scavenger Hunt: Put on your detective hat and explore the Frick’s grounds on a special scavenger hunt! Can you find the hidden snowmen? Visit the Grable Visitor Center to claim a prize once you’ve spotted them all!
  • Walking Path: Wander the walking path and explore the Frick’s 10-acre site. Turn an ear to history with the Duquesne SoundWalk, adding a new layer of dimensionality to your experience!
  • Greenhouse: Explore our active greenhouse, a renovation and partial reconstruction of one that served the Frick family from 1897 through the 1970s.

Art & History Activities

Enjoy a variety of art-making activities designed for visitors of all ages! Add to collaborative murals in the Grable Visitor Center and the Community Room and make yarn animals and other art projects in the Education Center. Free and open to all.

Cozy Treats: Hot Chocolate Bar: Jan. 18 & 19 | 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. | Community Room

Beat the winter cold and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate! Available while supplies last. Free and open to all.

The Frick Museums
January 18 & 19 | 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. | Free and open to all

  • Frick Art Museum: Experience Ebtehal Badawi’s community mural, Pittsburgh Builds Bridges, and the Frick’s permanent collections of fine and decorative arts.
  • Car and Carriage Museum: Travel back to the time of horse-drawn carriages, see some of the first horseless carriages to have an impact on Pittsburgh, and learn about Pittsburgh’s role in the developing automobile industry.
