Your April 4-6 weekend guide: from nature hikes to stage performances and much more

This first weekend of April is full of spring fun, from exciting library events to the first home baseball game of the season. Whether your family is looking for a small, quiet way to pass an afternoon or an exciting and fast-paced day, there’s something for everyone. Check out these local events before making any weekend plans:

Tuesday, April 1 – Sunday, April 6: “Peter Pan” at The Benedum Center

For 70 years, “Peter Pan” has been wowing audiences and this new adaptation is better than ever. Tickets begin at $38 and can be purchased directly through the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust website.

Friday, April 4: Little Artists at CLP Knoxville, 10:30 a.m.

Little Artists is a sensory experience for young children and their caregivers where they can explore colors, shapes, textures and materials. This program is for kids ages birth through 5, and caregivers should expect kids to get messy. This event is free, and no registration is required. Find more info right here.

Friday, April 4: Pirates Home Opener, 4:12 p.m. 

It’s time again for PNC Park to be packed with family fun at “412” o’clock. From pierogi races to fly balls, come check out the 2025 lineup and see if this will be the year the Pirates have a winning season. Find details on tickets, bag restrictions, and accommodations at PNC Park here.

Friday, April 4: Grand Slam on 6th, 12 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Kick off opening day with a block party! This Friday, 6th Street will be packed with food and drink specials from your favorite restaurants, live music, games and a grand slam raffle with epic prizes from local businesses. Saturday, April 5: Recycle Fest at the Children’s Museum of Pittsburgh, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

This Earth Month celebration will allow kids to make paper, transform plastic, learn about glass mosaic art, and more. There will be various stations throughout the museum for exploration and learning. All activities are included with admission. Find the full lineup of performers, artists, and activities here.

Saturday, April 5: Lunch with the Easter Bunny at the Heritage Public Library, 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.

This weekend, there are two seatings for lunch with the big Bunny himself. Join the staff at the library for lunch (chicken nuggets, mac and cheese, and other kid-friendly foods), crafts, games, face painting and more. Call 724-926-8400 to register (registration has been extended through this week, despite an earlier cutoff date listed on the website). The cost is $8 per child and $10 per adult.

Saturday, April 5: “Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus” community workshop at CLP Hazelwood, 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. 

On April 26, the famous pigeon will take the stage at the Byham Theater. Attendees at this free workshop will score free tickets! This event is intended for kids ages 3 to 8, but is open to everyone. There will be crafts and movement activities all themed around the work of Mo Willems and his feathered friend. Find more info here.

Saturday, April 5: Fiddlesticks at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra: 11:15 a.m. 

It’s time once again for the family-friendly PSO performance, Fiddlesticks. Music will be selected from “Harry Potter,” “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” and “Prokofiev’s Cinderella’s Waltz.” This event is at Heinz Hall and is perfect for kids ages 3 to 8, though all ages are welcome. Saturday, April 5: Visit with the Easter Bunny with South Side Kids, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. 

This weekend, stop by Cup Ka Joe’s at 31 S. 27th Street for free visits with the Easter Bunny. This event will also include an Easter Egg roll, spring crafts and activities for all ages. No signup is required, but find more details here.

Saturday, April 5: Family Nature Hike at Powdermill Nature Reserve, 2 p.m.

Join the environmentalists at Powdermill as they hit the trails for a guided nature walk. Guests will meet in the atrium before heading outside to explore. Registration is required for this event, and walk-in participants will be included on a first-come, first-serve basis.
