Your Pittsburgh weekend guide: Pgh Pride, Comicon, Three Rivers Arts Fest and more
This weekend is shaping up to be one of the most jam-packed and fun weekends of the whole summer for little ‘burghers. Not only are there three festivals in the city, you’ll also find a slew of events across the region ranging from dance and cooking classes to community carnivals.
It will be hard to pick just a few things to do this weekend, but there’s no wrong choice when so much great stuff is happening:
Friday, May 31: Opening of Three Rivers Arts Festival
Running through June 9, this classic festival kicks off this year on the final day of May. We have a big, comprehensive guide to everything going on at the festival. It includes World Square Market, happening in Market Square both weekends of the festival, featuring performances from cultures around the world. If you’ve never taken kids, it’s a perfect family-friendly outing. There are craft stations, live music, and more. The best part? Most of this festival is free.
Friday, May 31: Pittsburgh Montessori Fun Fair, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
The PTA at Pittsburgh Montessori is hosting a community event perfect for all ages. This is a community-wide carnival featuring games, bounce houses (including one for ages 5 and under), food, selfie stations, cardboard city, live music, O’Ryan the O’Amazing, Lydia Circus Arts, the Riverhounds and so much more. Friday, May 31: Food Truck Friday at Flour Power Studio, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
This kid-friendly cooking class at Flour Power will feature food truck favorites this week, ranging from walking tacos and funnel cakes to roasted street corn. Come flex your culinary muscle. Friday, May 31 through Sunday, June 2: Pittsburgh Pride
This year, Pittsburgh Pride will once again coincide with the Three Rivers Arts Festival to create a vibrant, welcoming celebration for residents of all ages. Pittsburgh Pride begins on Friday and runs through the weekend, with a parade on the North Side on Saturday at 12 p.m. The parade will arrive at Allegheny Commons Park by 1 p.m. where the party will keep going all day. Saturday, June 1: Neighborworks Homebuying Workshop, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
While this free event is for adults, the information provided benefits the whole family. Buying a home can be stressful and overwhelming, especially in this market. At the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Hill District location, HUD certified counselors will discuss topics such as fair housing, credit and more. A lender, realtor, inspector and insurance representative will be present to talk with participants. Find out more details here.
Saturday, June 1: Celebrating International Children’s Day at Pitt, 12 p.m. to 3 p.m.
International Children’s Day is a beloved tradition around the world and they’re celebrating it at Pitt. Come join the staff at the campus bookstore for festivities including book readings by a local children’s author, sweet treats and fun activities. Find more details here. Saturday, June 1: Touch-a-Truck and Mine Tours in Tarentum, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
At the Tour-Ed Mine and Museum in Tarentum, this family-friendly festival is aiming to raise funds for local autistic individuals. Enjoy seeing various commercial vehicles, horseback riding, mine tours, food, music and more. Find more details about this event here.
Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2: 3 Rivers Comicon
This two-day event at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center is packed with comic book creators, cosplay, performances and more. There are even kid cosplay competitions. Find all the details about registration and tickets here. Prices begin at just $5.
Sunday, June 2: Playdate at CLP, 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.
This free event at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh’s Allegheny branch on the North Side is designed for infants through age 5. Their large play space is bright and welcoming with plenty of toys and books to explore. Find out more about this event and all the library events here.
Sunday, June 2: Breakdancing for Kids, 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.
At Los Sabrosos, kids and adults can learn all types of dance styles. This Sunday, they are teaching the basics of breakdancing to kids in grades K through 8th. The cost is $20, and details (as well as a list of all of their classes) can be found here.
